THE name of the man behind the mask can now be revealed. Peter Karrie is to play the lead role in The Phantom of the Opera when it opens at the Grand Theatre in the Cultural Centre on June 16.

Welshman Peter has performed as the hideously deformed character in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical more than 1,000 times.

The 48-year-old spoke to Keeping Posted after being flown to the territory to announce his role before a packed press conference in the Clipper Lounge of the Peninsula.

Peter confided that when he booked into one of the hotel's luxury suites, complete with jacuzzi offering virtually floor-to-ceiling views of the territory, the first thing he did was to take a bath.

'Unfortunately, I was so tired I did not spot the switch which brings the blinds down electronically so I exposed myself to Hong Kong prematurely,' he joked.

A full interview with Peter will appear in the Post tomorrow.
