Housing study requested

THE Planning Department has commissioned a consultancy firm to undertake a comprehensive study of the redevelopment potential of the metropolitan areas of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Kowloon and Tsuen Wan-Kwai Tsing.

It will be asked to assess the redevelopment potential of the areas for residential use and estimate how many flats are likely to be built.

'The study will establish a comprehensively designed, computer-based system that can facilitate rapid assessment of redevelopment potential under various circumstances,' said a spokesman for the Planning Department.

He said that existing policies, statutory and institutional frameworks and procedures which either help or impede private sector redevelopment would be reviewed.

Key areas of high potential will be identified.
