AUSTRALIAN Jockey Club chairman of stewards John Schreck says he 'remains to be convinced' of allegations of race fixing in New South Wales.

'Racing thrives on rumour and scandal,' Schreck said last night.

'One week it's one thing, the next it's something else, but there isn't ever any concrete evidence or anything that sticks. There haven't been any charges in this case and it doesn't seem as though there will be.

'As far as I am concerned there isn't any evidence, at this stage, to substantiate the claims. It's rubbish.' The stories of race fixing are said to have been uncovered during an investigation by Australian Federal Police and the New South Wales Drug Enforcement Agency.

They are said to have heard discussions about race fixing while legally tapping the telephones of a person alleged to have been involved in drug dealing.

According to well-informed sources, the race fixing, involving leading jockeys and some trainers, was said to have been revealed in June of last year.

This led to the law enforcement agencies obtaining warrants to widen their telephone tapping operations. According to an informed source, one of the telephone conversations to the alleged drug dealer was from a top jockey wanting A$20,000 for organising a race.
