Territory's tall order in Singapore

THE territory's three clubs at the Singapore Sevens have drawn the short straw, being matched with the top three sides in the Ablitt Cup quarter-finals today.

Valley, Football Club and Police all performed creditably in the preliminary round yesterday with only Club losing a game (32-7 to Cambridge), as the local sides swept into the Cup competition.

But all three of them have formidable tasks today with Valley down to meet last year's winners Davetelavu of Fiji, while New Zealand clubs Petone and Ponsonby are set to meet Police and Club respectively.

According to Valley stalwart Jamie Scott, Ponsonby, winners in Singapore in 1988 and 1989, were in impressive form racking up 200 points in their three preliminary games.

Valley, who notched up 144 points in the preliminary round while conceding only one try to Casuarina will meet Singapore team Kurumi in the first round of the Cup today. Their test will come in the quarter-finals when they meet Davetelavu whom they lost to in the semis 7-21 last year.

Club meet Ponsonby first up today while Police meet Casuarina and, if they win, will come up against favourites Petone.
