The Personal computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) has announced a new card standard to improve compatibility.

The new release expands on PCMCIA Release 2.1 introduced in July 1993 and adds multiple function capabilities, direct memory access, low power cards and hosts, power management services and a 32-bit Card-Bus Interface.

To address compatibility, the new release includes an expanded Card Information Structure with specific configuration information on the PC card and allows for a more comprehensive dialogue between card and host. This new release is named the PC Card Standard to reduce confusion with the terms PCMCIA and PC Card.
