Eastern back on right track as Frankwell fall

HONG KONG giants Eastern put some of their recent disappointment behind them by earning a second-round berth in the Viceroy Cup following a 2-0 victory over Frankwell at Mongkok Stadium last night.

Eastern, winners of three trophies last season but showing alarming league form after their shock 1-0 loss to struggling Kui Tan, bounced back to form as they secured a second-round tie against high-flying Happy Valley.

Two second-half goals sealed the issue for the reigning league champions after Frankwell were forced to absorb the pressure in a lacklustre match which attracted a Saturday night crowd of only 2,408.

Eastern seized control of the match in the second half and skipper Lee Kin-wo opened the scoring in the 73rd minute after playing a neat 1-2 with striker Dale Tempest.

Lee was put through the middle and the Hong Kong international responded by crashing his effort into the roof of the net.

Eastern's confidence grew and four minutes later they extended their lead through defender Chan Chi-keung, who scored his first goal of the season.

The reliable defender ran on to meet Paul Nixon's free-kick and beat 'keeper Yam Wai-hung with a powerful header.

Meanwhile, Sing Tao and Golden meet in this afternoon's other first-round Viceroy Cup tie.
