Message from Khaleda Zia Prime Minister.

ON this glorious occasion, I extend my heartiest felicitations to all my countrymen at home and abroad.

I also pay tribute to the sacred memory of the valiant sons of the soil whose supreme sacrifices helped us achieve the status of an independent and sovereign state. May Almighty Allah grant eternal peace to the souls of these martyrs.

The main spirit behind our struggle for independence was to establish democracy and improve the socio-economic condition of the people.

In pursuit of these noble objectives, we are making relentless efforts to institutionalise democracy in the country.

We are placing great emphasis on development and production. High priority has been accorded to poverty alleviation. The national economy has new impetus through implementation of reform and restructuring programmes.

This has led to the creation of greater employment opportunities. Side by side, both domestic and foreign investments are being encouraged through implementation of a liberal industrial and investment policy.

As a result, Bangladesh has emerged as an attractive market for foreign investment.

Education is essential for development, so we have placed special importance on education for development of human resources. Primary education has been made compulsory and concrete steps have been taken to spread female education and bring the country's womenfolk into the mainstream of national development.

In the international arena, Bangladesh is consistently playing a positive role in the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth for the promotion of global peace and security.

Bangladesh's participation in United Nations' peace-keeping operations in different parts of the world has received commendation from all quarters.

The entire country is now pulsating with development activities under the existing democratic environment. The success of this work depends on peace, order and stability.

We should remember that freedom and responsibility are inter-linked. Let us work together to attain our desired goal, surmounting all impediments to democracy and development.

On this auspicious occasion, let us make a fresh vow to work for a happy, prosperous and self-reliant Bangladesh imbued with a deep sense of patriotism and the true spirit of the war of independence.

May Allah help us reach our cherished goal.
