One-sided

I WOULD like to comment on Brian Masters' article 'Earthly Powers' (South China Morning Post, March 11).

Two points are worthy of particular comment. First, Mr Masters' attempt to draw a parallel between the Pope and the Third Reich is quite grotesque and an insult to those millions who suffered at the hands of the Nazis.

Second, his references to Opus Dei, evidently an attempt to add a 'conspiracy theory' angle to an otherwise uninspired article, are, simply, nonsense. How any organisations whose members, as Mr Masters admits, dedicate themselves to the service of Christ can be described as 'sinister' is quite beyond me.

What Mr Masters fails to appreciate, or what he cannot accept, is that hundreds of millions of people throughout the world believe in the message of Christ as taught by the Catholic Church and accept its teachings, including those on abortion and contraception.

What he ignores is the vast contribution made by the Church and its organisations (including Opus Dei) to social welfare and education throughout the world.
