Wong puts paid to Lau's poll hopes

The victor . . . Kwai Tsing by-election candidate, Democrat Wong Yiu-chung celebrates his 1,231-732 poll win over dissident Lau Shan-ching late last night. While pleased with the outcome, he complained that the Government had not adequately explained why the ballot was necessary.

And the vanquished . . . Mr Lau, who had fought in the courts for his right to contest a seat in the elections, spent a busy day canvassing some of the 1,969 voters who turned out - but to no avail.
