NEWS of one of those language confusions that can provoke humour or fury came our way the other day when a colleague was ringing the Furama Kempinski Hotel in search of Mr Justice Power, who happened to be chairman of the Wines of the Pacific Rim Festival.
He asked the telephonist: 'Is Noel Power there?' She replied: 'Just a minute, I'll connect you to the engineer.' He asked why and she said, 'because you said you have no power'.
IF you catch Mike Matthews, GM of the Ritz-Carlton, walking around with a smile on his face, that's because his soccer team beat the Mandarin Oriental 5-4 in the annual hotel football championship.
Rivalry between Mike and Seamus McManus at the Mandarin is intense. Mike's eleven, the Ritz Crackers, are nowhere near as experienced a team as the Mandarin's, so it was a satisfying result for him. Before the match, Mike accused Seamus of employing foul methods by feeding his team Guinness. Clearly, it wasn't good enough for them.
BIG plans are afoot for the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay. Its night spot, the Talk of the Town, really will become the talk of the town with a planned refurbishment later this year. A stunning new rooftop restaurant is also on the menu.
It all promises to be environmentally-friendly, though, promises PR manager Cecilia Lui.
The hotel boasts a green committee and demonstrated its credentials recently with a bird-spotting trip to Mai Po marshes, where they saw the increasingly rare 'black face spoonbill'.
The event was organised to raise staff members' awareness of nature conservation.
