Ping's Special has the winning habit

Robin Parke

WINNER'S Special must go down as one of the most improved horses in training this season and he can notch a hat-trick of successes in the third event on tonight's Sha Tin card.

Winner's Special is another from the formidable yard of in-form trainer Wong Tang-ping who bids for his first Hong Kong title this season and lies just two off the pace set by Patrick Biancone.

It took some time for Winner's Special to find his winning feat in Hong Kong, but he has been right there in virtually every race since breaking through and losing his local maiden tag.

Greg Childs rode him over a mile last time and said yesterday: 'It was a very strong win by over four lengths and we were never in any danger. This is obviously harder, but you have to hand it to Ping, he is really working the magic this season.

'Harder though this is, you have to fancy him on his last winning run. He is a really improved horse this season,' said the New Zealander, on the crest of a winning wave after another double on Saturday.

Winner's Special has been short-headed over the 1,900-metre trip, but the distance is no real worry - although bottomweight Musical Insight could be.

The Irish import really is crying out for more ground and gets it tonight after a strong run over 1,600 metres last time where nothing went right for Danny Lee, his regular rider.

Despite the presence of some other handy performers in this field, it would not be difficult to suggest this could be a one-hit quinella. They are both strong, younger horses and fully capable of further improvement.

Topweight Nervous Witness has had a great season and won last time after a spell. He has also run well over this distance in the past and is the third choice in this 10-runner event which is also the first leg of the Triple Trio.
