THE 10th edition of the Dunhill San Fernando Race has developed into a two-boat dog fight with Rick and Inge Strompf's X-Rated marginally holding sway over Keith Jacobs' smaller Bimblegumbie.

At yesterday afternoon's position schedule the 51-foot, X-512 X-Rated, was 68 miles from the finish near the coastal port of San Fernando in the northern Philippines with the 43-foot Dubois, Bimblegumbie, eight miles astern.

That pair had broken away from the remainder of the 33-strong fleet between yesterday's morning and afternoon position schedules.

Yesterday morning Bimblegumbie was only 15 miles ahead of third-placed Intrigue, Dr Ian Nicholson's Banner 41.

But by the afternoon schedule Intrigue had slipped back to fourth on the water behind the Whitbread 40 Millennium skippered by Jan Brinkers.

Millennium was 27 miles astern of Bimblegumbie with Intrigue another two miles further back clearly indicating that the eight-knot north northeasterly breeze was petering out from the back of the fleet.

Race organisers predict the leaders will have finished this morning but the notoriously fickle inshore breezes off the coast of northern Luzon Island could well becalm the leaders as give them an armchair ride to the finish.
