Opening meeting the best pointer

Robin Parke

THE all-weather surface at Sha Tin can make some races a lottery but evidence from the first meeting suggested horses drawn outside and those equipped with pacifiers had the advantage. With only one meeting on the surface, it is impossible to lay down hard and fast rules and the prospect of upsets makes the Triple Trio even more alluring. Fields are fairly full in all three legs with the second leg, a Class Four short sprint, looking a potential disaster area for TT bettors.

In-form Greg Childs, who had a double on Easter Saturday to take his tally to eight winners, partners topweight House Honour in the first leg, a Class Three event over 1,650 metres. The Gary Ng Ting-keung-trained galloper was noted as solely an equitrack runner until he burst through at Sha Tin on the turf six weeks ago at huge odds. But his form is on the synthetic surface and in Class Three over this trip with Childs up and a wide draw, he looks the banker. Leading trainer John Moore has engaged Gary Stevens, fresh from a 10-day stint in America, for useful Seattle Pride and it would be foolhardy to leave him out.

Moore also has another noted equitrack performer in Kwacha who will be ridden by Tony Cruz.

Champion jockey Basil Marcus was the renowned king of the Happy Valley dirt and he is worth siding with in the second leg of the TT where he takes out Super Win Boo for trainer Wylie Wong Wai-lit. Super Win Boo finished a close-up fourth under Mick Kinane last time in a hotter race than this.

Childs partners Third Time Lucky who also finished fourth at his last start and could reach the frame here, along with Chiu Chow Kid who will be ridden by claimer Peter W. L. Ho. This lad is worth his seven pounds and Chiu Chow Kid could run on strongly.

Irish import Gainsborough's Boy showed his first Hong Kong form when finishing third at his last start and is brought back in distance to 1,650 metres for the final race.

Good trackworker Bounty is a chance along with topweight Chater Sovereign, who is equipped with pacifiers for the first time.
