Kennedy's exact words

DAVID Chu (South China Morning Post, April 18) said US president John F Kennedy once exhorted his countrymen: 'Don't ask what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.' If he is going to quote the best known line from President Kennedy's inaugural address on January 20, 1961, he might as well use his exact words.

What he actually said was: 'And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.' He followed that with a call to the international community: 'Ask not what America can do for you - ask what we together can do for the freedom of man.' K Y TSUI Kowloon
