DUTCH navigator Abel Tasman was ordered in 1642 to search the southern oceans for 'the remaining, unknown part of the terrestrial globe'.

He discovered New Zealand and the island of Tasmania but inexplicably missed Australia.

He rectified the oversight on another voyage two years later.
