I REFER to 'Laws mooted on flats abroad' (South China Morning Post, April 28).
The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) has fought against misleading descriptions of floor areas in sales brochures for flats. We therefore welcome the Law Reform Commission's proposals as a long-overdue measure of consumer protection.
The general practice division of the HKIS has for some time been working on a Code of Measuring Practice in anticipation of the commission's recommendations about the meaning of 'gross floor area' and 'saleable area' and the need to show accurate and truthful dimensions in accompanying floor plans. The code will be recommended for use by all property professionals, not only members of the HKIS.
