Woman died after wine bottle assault
A GAMBLER beat his friend's lover to death with two wine bottles in a frenzied attack following a row over a $32,000 debt, the High Court heard yesterday.
Yu Wing-sze, 35, struck Chan Pui-fong more than 10 times with the bottles, and hit her so hard they both smashed, the court was told.
He was said to have run off when a maid returned home with Chan's six-year-old daughter.
Police found Chan lying unconscious in a pool of blood in her bedroom surrounded by shards of glass.
Yu, a driver, admitted attacking Chan, 35, at her flat in City One, Sha Tin, on April 22, last year, but said he did not intend to kill her. He has denied murder.
Yu claimed he lost his temper when Chan reneged on a promise to pay him $32,000 owed by her boyfriend Leung Chi-wai, 36, in gambling debts and in payment for electrical goods.
He told police Chan refused to pay because her boyfriend was squandering money on a mistress in China.
'She said he had a woman stashed away in Shenzhen and he had fathered a child, so it was unreasonable for her to shoulder his debts if he had enough money for womanising. I thought they were up to their tricks together in order not to pay the money. I was so furious so I slapped her once.' In his interview Yu said Chan cried rape and he picked up a bottle because he was frightened.
'After I hit her once the bottle broke.
'She appeared to be very much alive and shouted for help. She ran into the bedroom.
'I took up another wine bottle and chased her into the bedroom. I hit her over the head more than 10 times with the wine bottle until it broke.
'I didn't know she would die.
'I just wanted to hit her to cause her to faint and to stop her shouting for help.' Prosecutor Bernard Ryan said Chan fell into a coma and never regained consciousness.
She died in hospital on May 1 last year.
The trial before Mr Justice Duffy continues.
