THE Open Learning Institute is hoping to improve the quality of teaching standards in the territory's schools, by expanding its secondary education programme.

Applications open today for the first distance-taught Bachelor of Education (honours) programme in Secondary Education and a new Bachelor of Business Administration (honours) programme in banking and finance.

The new education programme is specially designed for non-graduate secondary school teachers of English, Chinese or Mathematics. Only school teachers with a recognised teacher's certificate and a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience are eligible to apply for the institute's new courses.

The Dean of the Institute's School of Education, Dr Ronnie Carr, said the additional courses aimed to iron out flaws in the education system.

'We are trying to improve the quality of teaching and make a contribution to the reduction of non-graduate secondary teachers,' Dr Carr said.
