Fifteen management candidates over first hurdle
FIFTEEN Hong Kong candidates who made up the first batch to complete one unit in the Oxford Management Award programme received their certificates recently.
The candidates came from various companies representing the services and manufacturing sectors.
They will continue in the programme, which has nine units outlining the different roles and responsibilities of managers under four main areas - managing operations, finance, people and information.
Certificates were awarded to the candidates at a ceremony attended by Paul Abbot, the chief verifier of University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations, and S. K. Chan, executive director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).
There are nine management fields incorporated into this competence-based programme offered jointly by HKPC and University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations.
Individuals who enrol are measured against a comprehensive set of Oxford management standards that are globally recognised.
These managers are evaluated while at work. Evidence submitted in their portfolios is also checked for authenticity.
Advisers from the HKPC and Oxford visit the candidates at work and meet them regularly.
The advisers help the candidates interpret the Oxford standards and identify areas for improvement.
They will also identify the priority areas for each individual manager. Evaluations of candidates' work in a particular unit in the programme is done on the basis of documentary proof compiled as a portfolio and forwarded to the advisers. It is not necessary to take time from work for the programme, because the way in which a candidate carries out his duties as a manager forms the backbone of documentary evidence submitted to assessors from HKPC and Oxford.
Candidates awarded certificates were: Diana Mak (Cafe de Coral Holdings); Alleni Cheung, Phelix Kwong and Anissa Leung (Shun Hing Electronic Trading); Asso Lee, Oliver Leung and May Wong (Double Kingdom OA); Albert Au and Alan Kam (GPE International); and Joanne Kom (Woofoo Plastics). In addition, there were five candidates from the HKPC: L. M. Li, C. M. Lin, Richard Liu, Wilfred Leung and John Yeow.
The qualification is awarded to candidates who complete all units in the programme.
The scheme focuses on competence in handling business problems, rather than academic knowledge. The programme is offered through the Learning Centre for Management, a unit of HKPC.
