Third time unlucky for deportees

SOME of the boat people arriving in the territory have been deported twice before.

Security Branch figures reveal Vietnamese are continuing to arrive despite warnings they have no future in Hong Kong.

The biggest month for arrivals this year was April with 52. That compares to 13 in April last year and none for the corresponding period the year before.

Up to June 7, 117 boat people had arrived this year, with some being intercepted in boats and others after they had landed.

Seven have arrived this month and many more are expected to follow on the strength of proposals before the United States Congress to offer resettlement to thousands of Vietnamese.

A source said several of the arrivals this year had been to Hong Kong once or twice before. They are known as doublebackers and triplebackers.

Last year, a total of 363 arrived compared with 101 the year before.

The existing Vietnamese population is about 21,000 people compared to about 26,000 this time last year.
