New link to Beijing next year
HONGKONG Telecom says it will open its multi-billion dollar fibre-optic link between the territory and Beijing by the end of next year.
The firm's chief executive Linus Cheung said the fibre-optic link would cost $544 million.
The link will provide mainlanders with an improved domestic and international telephone service.
Mr Cheung said work on the link from Guangzhou and Beijing would be under way within a month.
Contracts for the project were signed two months ago.
A fibre-optic link between Hong Kong and Guangzhou was recently completed.
A Hongkong Telecom analyst said the Chinese Ministry of Post and Telecommunications would benefit more from the project than Hongkong Telecom.
