US immigration tougher

AS a fellow American, I refer to the letter headlined 'Immigration policy works against Americans' (South China Morning Post, June 13) and would like to state that it is the Sheridan Petersons of the US, who write before they think, that allow citizens of other nations to ridicule us.

The 'many nationalities' that are given three-month visas view the Queen of England as their head of state.

As our forefathers fought and died in the American Revolution to break any ties with British rule, your difficulties in obtaining a work permit in Hong Kong are inconsequential by comparison.

Each country has an obligation to protect its own and you will find that US immigration is more difficult for other citizens than Hong Kong immigration is for us.

Until people like you stop writing such letters, the other nations of the world will continue to view us as arrogant and ignorant.
