THREE gunmen, one of their two hostages and a policeman were killed yesterday in gun battles in Guangdong.

A shootout at a restaurant left two gunmen and a policeman dead. And a third gunman was later shot by police after he killed one of the gang's two hostages.

More than 100 shots were fired at the restaurant by Public Security Bureau officers and the gunmen in the province's Nanhai City.

The drama began when two factory supervisors were taken hostage at Yung Ki town, Shun Tak City. The three-man gang demanded the pair contact relatives to raise a 800,000 yuan (HK$745,600) ransom.

Relatives - who were told to deliver the cash to a restaurant at Nanhai, Fatshan - told police.

Public Security Bureau officers surrounded the restaurant when the gang arrived to collect the cash.

A gun battle began, with the gang trying to flee with the two hostages. Two of the three armed men and one officer were killed.

The third gunman escaped with the hostages and was later seen entering a house in Kam Sha Tan. Police surrounded it and one captive escaped.

After discovering the man had killed his other hostage, officers stormed the house. The man was shot dead.
