Gifted children in focus

HUNDREDS of international education experts will descend on Hong Kong at the end of the month to discuss how to help the best and brightest children succeed at school.

The five-day conference, running from July 30 to August 4, will look at the special needs of exceptional children.

'This is a fantastic chance for Hong Kong to show the world what we have to offer in terms of children and our education,' said Helen Yu Ku Siu-yin, of the department of applied social science at Polytechnic University. 'They will look at how to help and promote the academically able, the creative child and those with an IQ above 130.' In 1992, the Government began looking at options for exceptional children, often seen as underachievers by teachers.

The conference will also focus on children who have special needs or are physically or mentally handicapped.
