LEARNING to appreciate the environment is the first step towards conservation, according to a Hong Kong resident who visited the Antarctic earlier this year, bringing home with him a message of environmental awareness.

'Most Hong Kong people know very little about the Antarctic. Some may think it is just a piece of wasteland in a remote part of the world,' said TVB's Caleb Tse Kwok-shun, who ventured to the southern tip of the earth in February.

The crew of six, which included two TVB artists - Joey Leung Wing-chung and Dao Tai-yu - produced a 11/2-hour documentary, From the Tropics to the Antarctic, during their 21-day journey.

'The documentary is about environmental awareness. Viewers will see the magnificent scenery and wildlife in the Antarctic and realise the region should be protected,' Dao said.

Leung said the trip not only broadened his horizons but inspired him to give life more thought.
