Wine: Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva.

Grape: Sangiovese.

Region: Tuscany, Italy Vintage: 1990 1990 was an outstanding vintage in Europe, especially in France and in Italy. The next three years were generally miserable vintages in Bordeaux, Tuscany and Piedmont, and it may be several more years before top quality current vintage wines become available from these regions.

Chianti Classico is an enigmatic wine with enormous variations in quality, so stick to reliable producers in good years in order to avoid thin, acidic wines lacking fruit. The Antinori family have been producing wine since the 14th century and have established a reputation for fine quality wine at all levels.

The Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori is characteristic of good Chianti. It is a medium-bodied wine with a rather dry, dusty nose and interesting raspberry flavours on the palate.

Where To Buy: Direct from the importer Remy Fine Wines (Tel: 2523-5904) at $105 per bottle or $91 by the case. The 1991 vintage is the same price!
