IT is guaranteed that there will be an annual debate in these columns on the pros and cons of Filipinos being allowed to mess up Statue Square and environs on Sundays.

On one side, we have the defenders of the downtrodden, that is, the expat population, and on the other side the locals.

Not wishing to take sides with either, I would, however, like to ask the former group what the likely outcome of say 25,000 Pakistanis gathering outside Buckingham Palace every Sunday would be? Or it could be 25,000 Hispanics outside the White House. Or - wait for this one - 25,000 Chinese outside the Malacanang Palace.

Give me a break - they would all be cleared off at a minute's notice. So please enlighten me as to why it is all right for a similar number of Filipinos to doss outside the Legco building and the surrounding areas.

Before the Filipinos start whining as to what they are supposed to do on Sundays, try these ideas: a trip to the beach, the cinema, Ocean Park, a barbecue, hiking in the country parks, Hong Kong Park, Kowloon Park, Botanical Gardens, swimming pools, tennis courts, yum cha, window shopping, outlying islands, the Peak - in short, when in Rome do as the Romans do.
