Support trust's efforts

THE anxieties expressed by Mr A. Williams with regard to the number of Filipinos in Statue Square (South China Morning Post, August 8), are felt by many in Hong Kong.

This is a much debated point and much energy is expended in its pursuit. But why not channel that energy into an alternative - The Bayanihan Trust? The Bayanihan Trust is a charity organisation. Its mission is to enhance the lives of contract and domestic workers in Hong Kong.

While the trust is not in existence in order to clean Statue Square, it has taken steps to provide an alternative.

Six activity centres (Sunday only) have been opened to provide social, cultural and educational activities and two permanent centres will follow soon.

However, these centres cannot hope to cater to the needs of the vast numbers of people who could use such centres, due to limited capacity and funds.

Could I suggest Mr Williams helps support the Bayanihan Trust and in doing so helps create an alternative for the maids who, as Mr Williams must be aware, free up the time of many Hong Kong professionals for both work and recreation.
