HK kick in surprise
HONG KONG'S schoolboys soccer team pulled off a surprise by reaching the semi-finals of the Asian Schools Soccer Championships in Brunei.
South Korea and China were favourites to qualify from the preliminary pool which also featured India and Singapore, but the Hong Kong squad managed to stay unbeaten in their group matches.
The tournament was hit by very heavy rain on the first day but the Hong Kong squad were not affected and kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over India.
It was also raining on the next day when they took on China, and the spirited Hong Kong boys were on the verge of victory with two goals from Tam Wai-kwok until the Chinese levelled the score in the dying minute.
Hong Kong then bounced back with a 1-0 win over Singapore and in their final group match, they came back from 2-0 down in the first half to hold South Korea to a 2-2 draw.
They two wins-two draws final result saw them finish second in the preliminary pool behind South Korea and earning them a place in the semi-finals.
However, the Hong Kong team squandered several missed opportunities in their semi-final match against Indonesia and conceded two goals in the last seven minutes.
