For the first time in Hong Kong, Vacheron Constantin evokes an aspect of Fine Watchmaking at the WATCHES&WONDERS exhibition by offering a tuneful and luminous experimental route presenting some of its finest striking watches from its legacy.
The Swiss watchmaker is renowned as the pioneer in exceptional striking watchmaking. Its reputation grew in the early 19th century when the founder’s grandson Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, a specialist of striking repeater watches, took the reins of the Maison. Soon famous collectors commissioned their own models. Among them were Sir Bhupindra Singh, the Maharajah of Patiala, who acquired a pocket chronograph clockwatch with alarm, date and moon phases dated 1909; and the famous American automobile manufacturer James Ward Packard, who ordered a quarter and half-quarter repeating pocket chronograph clockwatch with Grande and Petite Sonnerie in 1918.
Guests at the exhibition can admire the revered Maison’s array of striking watches and discover the mysteries of a rare horological complication much sought-after by collectors around the world. Highlights include an 1812 red gold quarter-repeater pocket watch with a guilloché dial, along with an 1827 pocket watch with quarter repeater, jumping hours and small seconds.
With the advent of the wristwatch in the 20th century, the Maison continues to innovate in this facet of watchmaking by creating spectacular feats of ultimate finesse and ultra-thin timepieces housing a number of complications. Also showcased at the exhibition is a 1955 minute repeater model equipped with a calibre measuring less than 3.28mm thick and a minute repeater featuring a movement entirely openworked and decorated by hand in an expression of pure and exquisite beauty.
