Ancient pyramid

SOME of the most spectacular and romantic Mayan ruins in Central America are in the forested hills of Palenque.

Abandoned around the 12th century and discovered intact in the late 19th century, the centre piece of the ruins is the Pyramid of the Inscriptions. Deep within it is a crypt containing the sarcophagus of the Sun God.
