New York Yankees keep pace in American League wild card
PAUL O'Neill's RBI single broke a seventh-inning tie as the New York Yankees erupted for nine runs in the final two innings to keep pace in the American League wild card hunt with a 9-2 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees won for the 15th time in 20 games and climbed within a half-game of Seattle for the wild card berth.
David Cone (16-8), facing his former team for the first time since being dealt to New York, improved to 7-2 as a Yankee, including a 6-0 home mark. He allowed one run - a Shawn Green homer in the seventh that broke a scoreless tie. He gave up six hits in eight innings, walking two and striking out five.
O'Neill and Wade Boggs each drove in two runs for the Yankees, who took advantage of two errors by pitcher Danny Cox (1-3) in the decisive seventh inning.
Cox relieved rookie Jeff Ware, who shut out New York for six innings.
