Dreadful taxi trip to hotel

THERE should be a sound mechanism for monitoring taxi services in Hong Kong.

On September 13, I took some visitors in a taxi from Kai Tak Airport to the Omni Marco Polo Hotel, in Kowloon, at 6.30pm. The inconsiderate driver deliberately turned the volume of his radio up when we started chatting to each other. Throughout the journey, he was racing with other taxis.

He drove erratically, sometimes going almost at full speed and then braking suddenly.

I wanted to complain to the Transport Complaints Unit, but I reckoned that it would achieve nothing. The problems I encountered are the tip of the iceberg. The Transport Department should set up a mechanism to effectively monitor and prosecute taxi drivers who behave badly.

There should be officials who regularly check driving standards and level of customer service.

Ordinances and regulations mean nothing if they are not enforced. Errant taxi drivers should be punished and hopefully this will act as a deterrent.

I would like to know what the Transport Department is doing to try and ensure taxi drivers obey the rules.
