Mainland transport reverses

THE transportation industry in China showed an overall decline in the first eight months of this year, the latest report from the State Statistics Bureau says.

Air freight continued to be the exception.

Total freight in the period decreased by 1.9 per cent to 1.777 billion tonnes.

Road freight dropped 9.5 per cent to 304 million tonnes and water freight slipped 3.8 per cent to 413 million tonnes.

Railway volume increased 1.3 per cent to 1.059 billion tonnes and air freight soared 20 per cent to 620,000 tonnes.

Freight turnover - an important indicator in monitoring labour productivity and economic efficiency - increased 7.8 per cent to 1,929 billion tonne-kilometres. A tonne-kilometre is one tonne of cargo transported one kilometre.

Of the total, railways reported a 3.8 per cent increase, road freight turnover dropped 4.9 per cent and air freight turnover was up 21 per cent.
