8pc taxi fare rise proposed

Naomi Lee

A TAXI association yesterday proposed an 8.1 per cent fare rise to compensate for inflated operation costs.

The Taxi Associations' Federation, which represents about 10,000 taxi operators from 13 organisations, suggested a $1 increase in the flagfall to $14 and a 10-cent rise for every 200 metres to $1.20.

They also suggested 10 cents be added to the $1.10 charge on each minute's waiting, while charges for baggage, pets and pick-up service should remain at $5.

The proposed increase is 1.7 per cent lower than that suggested by the Taxi Operators' Association last month.

Spokesman for the federation, Ng Kwok-hung, said the fares should be changed in January.

Fare were increased by 14 per cent last January.

The Transport Advisory Committee is expected to discuss the proposal next month.
