Angels pray for miracle

THE California Angels will be praying for one more miracle as they face the Mariners at Seattle today (Hong Kong time) in a one-game play-off for the American League West title and the chance to play the Yankees, who clinched the AL wild card spot, in New York.

The new, expanded play-off format begins tomorrow with the Boston Red Sox against the red-hot Indians at Cleveland in the best-of-five series. The Indians finished the regular season with their 100th victory, a 17-7 rout of the Kansas City Royals.

In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds face the Western Division champions Dodgers at Los Angeles, while the Colorado Rockies host the Atlanta Braves. The Rockies - in just their third season - clinched the NL wild card spot on the final day of the regular season with a 10-9 triumph over the San Francisco Giants, becoming the earliest expansion team ever to qualify for post-season play.
