Gold mine closed

MORE than 30,000 peasant prospectors have poured into a remote mountainous region in western China in search of gold, prompting the government to close all mines in the area, according to Xinhua (the New China News Agency).

The crackdown is intended to help to manage and protect gold reserves and wild animals and plants in Hoh Xil, western Qinghai province.
