I WAS puzzled when reading K. M. Shen's letter in these columns on October 19.

Why does he assume the foreign persons gathering in Statue Square on weekday afternoons are maids? Surely the obvious conclusion - if they gather there primarily on week-days at around 5pm - is that they are legitimate office workers who have just finished work.

Is K. M. Shen aware that there are many Filipinas (and, I believe, other foreign nationals) working in Hong Kong who are not maids? TIMOTHY HOUGHTON Central
