I AM a domestic helper and I am amazed by the wasteful habits of Hong Kong people.

At the shops the check-out staff give plastic bags without thinking twice. At the doctor's clinic they give out tiny little plastic bags with the medicine and plastic spoons that most people already have at home.

In my country we bring our own bags to the shop and we put small purchases in our handbag with a receipt taped to it.

Hong Kong people may be amazed, but we never waste things. Life is simpler where I come from, but the air is clean and we don't see rubbish bags piled all over the place. When I go out in Hong Kong, I am always sure to see a rat.

I pity the next generation who will suffer from the abuses of this most wasteful generation of plastic bag lovers.
