FedEx aiming for Japan-China link

FEDERAL Express (FedEx) has been seeking authorisation from Japan's Ministry of Transport to fly from Japan to China, sources say.

The major US freight forwarder plans to expand its next-day delivery service, which began in September, from Tokyo and Osaka to 11 other Asian destinations.

In the bilateral talks on air cargo, Japanese officials have told their US counterparts they would not accommodate more requests from US carriers to fly beyond Japanese destinations, unless Japanese carriers could fly beyond the US.

FedEx is requesting permission to fly the Osaka-Beijing and Osaka-Shanghai routes, twice a week.

The company already has rights to fly from Osaka to seven other Asian destinations.
