No half measures for winner Lee
VETERAN cross country runner Lee Kar-lun - representing Road Runners Athletics Club - yesterday scored his maiden win in the Annual Nike Half Marathon run over a hilly 21.1-kilometre course near Plover Cove in the New Territories. But Lee's win was earned only after Watson's Athletic Club's Roberto De Vido was hit by stomach cramps less than a kilometre from the finish line as he looked set to take the overall men's title for the second year in a row. Lee hit the finish line in a time of one hour, 12 minutes and 44 seconds with De Vido taking second place in 1:13:09.
Li Kar-yin, of Tsuen Wan Athletics Club, finished a solid third in 1:14:58, while Macau's Fong Tze-man finished fourth in 1:15:34. Ladies Road Runners Club's Yuko Gordon made it six wins in a row clocking 1:24:25 to win the women's race overall scoring an easy victory over Watson's Athletics Club's veteran Winnie Ng. And in her first competitive outing for nearly five years, Wong Fung-fun grabbed third in 1:29:46 with LRRC's Gillian Castka coming home fourth in 1:30:25.
From the gun eventual winner Lee and De Vido took control of the race as the pack of over 600 starters streamed out on to Brides Pool for the long and steep climb toward Wu Kau Tang and on down to the turnaround point near Sha Tau Kok Road. The pair battled it out shoulder to shoulder going through five kilometres in 16 minutes and eight kilometres in 26:45 as the hilly course took its toll. With just five kilometres left to run, the pair were still together with the time at 46:50 and nearly two minutes ahead of third placed Li Kar-yin.
