THERE has been a lot of discussion recently, regarding the plight of children who are left unattended at home while both their parents go out to work.
The Hong Kong Family Welfare Society says that parents who leave young children alone at home, are being irresponsible and should be prosecuted.
The society highlighted a case where two very young children were left alone for 10 hours. It feels such prosecutions would act as a deterrent.
I don't think this solves anything.
Tougher legislation would be targeted at low-income families, where both the mother and the father must work to make ends meet. This is unfair.
Contrast their predicament with mothers from rich families, who can afford to stay at home or who can employ a domestic helper to look after the children.
