Pearl delta ports boom
THE Pearl River Delta now has more than 60 ports, making it a major international transshipment centre, Xinhua says.
Handling capacity at the ports had grown at 12 per cent annually since 1990.
There are now 95 deep-water berths and six deep-water ports in the delta.
In 1993, the delta ports handled 300 million tons of freight and 9.3 million containers, or 8.5 per cent of the world's total containers, compared with 1.5 million containers only 13 years before.
