THREE mainlanders were arrested and a stolen car recovered yesterday in an operation involving the anti-smuggling taskforce, Marine Police and the Royal Navy.

Officers were told two speedboats would be coming from Weidong to pick up cars from a pier near Tap Shek Kok, Castle Peak.

The two speedboats appeared at about 2 am to meet two trucks and a crane which lowered the cars on to the boats.

One of the boats escaped while the other was intercepted near Siu Lang Shui, due partly to engine trouble.

Three tear-gas canisters were fired by Marine Police.

Two of the three crew abandoned the vessel but were injured by debris and arrested while the third remained on the vessel. The men, aged 22 to 27, were from Weizhou.

The speedboat was carrying a Mercedes Benz reported missing from Kowloon.
