Size of deep-draft US fleet decreases

THE privately-owned, deep-draft fleet of the US Merchant Marine totalled 393 vessels with a carrying capacity of about 17 milion deadweight tons (DWT) on October 1.

According to the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration, the total was comprised of 322 oceangoing ships and 71 Great Lakes vessels.

Compared with October last year, the number of ships in the fleet decreased by 41 vessels and the fleet's carrying capacity decreased by a total of 1.35 million DWT.

There were four commercial ships under construction or an order as of October 1, 1995.

In addition, there were four ships undergoing major conversion.
