Birthday gift from students

MORE than 1,000 students and teachers from St Paul's Secondary School took part in a walkathon recently to raise funds for the school's 35th anniversary celebrations.

The Walkathon '95 was organised by the school's Prefect Board with the support of some staff members.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was officiated by supervisor Sister Margaret Wong and principal Diana Wong and other guests.

Sister Margaret, Mrs Wong, the teaching staff and some 1,000 students showed their support for the school by joining the walkathon.

The starting point was the school, located in Happy Valley. The participants then moved on to Ventris Road, Blue Pool Road, Tai Hung Road and finally through Broadwood Road back to the school. The journey took about 11/2 hours.

The participants had a good time under the watchful eyes of some police officers, members of the St John's Ambulance Brigade, girl guides and the road safety patrol.

The organisers had put up signs on the route earlier in the week so the participants would not lose their way.

The colourful banners and flags put up by the students reflected their spirit and enthusiasm.

The walkathon proceeded in an orderly manner as the participants were well-disciplined and followed police instructions.

'The participants are very enthusiastic as they want to raise money for the school's anniversary celebrations and the open day,' a student said, adding that they also appreciated the efforts the organisers had put in.

Despite the exhausting journey, one of the students said: 'Although the walk itself was not the most comfortable, it was an exciting and meaningful experience. I'm proud to be able to do something for my school.' Some students said the event had helped enhance their sense of belonging towards the school.

'The walkathon was a success, not just in terms of the funds raised, but also in terms of the spirit and enthusiasm displayed by the students,' said one of the teachers.

'We wanted to raise about $150,000 through the walkathon, but the outcome surpassed our hopes,' said a member of the Prefect Board. 'We have raised about $200,000 so far.' The organisers thanked the St John's Ambulance Brigade, the Royal Hong Kong Police Force, the District Traffic Team (Wan Chai) and the Happy Valley Patrol Sub-unit 2 for their support.
