YOUR article on the widespread cyanide fishing practice being employed by fishermen in Southeast Asia (November 13), has successfully highlighted how serious the problem is regarding the destruction and imminent extinction of certain coral communities and reef species alike, in places still unexplored by humankind.

The issue has raised serious concerns that regional governments must take the necessary steps to protect and restore their vulnerable undersea habitats.

Only then can the interests of the international communities which care for our planet's environment, and more importantly, the medical and scientific advances related to the potential breakthroughs in the near future using extracts from corals and reef fishes yet unexplored, be safeguarded.
