Victor Victoria triumphs
WHENEVER the movie Victor-Victoria was shown on television in his hometown of Cabanatuan City, Victor de la Cruz would squirm in his seat.
Until yesterday the macho 33-year-old sailor had more reason than anybody to squirm at the film's androgynous title; he was known as Victor to his family and friends and as Victoria to the Government.
The midwife who delivered him switched his name at the Civil Registry Office in 1962, and, to compound her error, listed his gender as female.
Victor-Victoria didn't worry too much until he landed a job in the Middle East and had to apply for a passport and a nautical marine licence. The Foreign Affairs Department would not issue the passport unless the seaman went to court.
After two days of evidence, Victor came out victorious over Victoria, and the ebullient seaman immediately went out to celebrate his newly regained manhood.
