CHILEAN copper giant Codelco has accused a trading house subsidiary of Metallgesellschaft of kickbacks, according to yesterday's European edition of the Wall Street Journal. Codelco filed a lawsuit in Florida last month alleging Metallgesellschaft Corp, the American subsidiary of the German metallurgy outfit, deposited US$1.5 million in the Cayman Islands bank account of Juan Pablo Davila. The former Codelco head trader was accused of fraud by Chile in 1994, following losses of $170 million run up by the mining company in trades on the London Metal Exchange in 1993. The same lawsuit claims that the British investment bank Morgan Grenfell deposited an additional $1.1 million in Davila's account.
