A FLOATING dock that can accommodate 100,000 dwt vessels was commissioned recently after 11 months of construction on Chongming Island, in the Yangtze River's estuary.

The dock was converted from a 234,000 dwt oil tanker.

It is 255.9 metres long, 53 metres wide and has a lifting capacity of 30,000 tonnes.

Earlier, vessels of 100,000 dwt and above had to sail upstream on the Yangtze to Jiangsu province, or along the coast to Shanghaiguan, in Hebei province, 500 nautical miles to the north, for repair and maintenance work.
